Expressions of Interest are now open for a variety of new Lecturer positions across the disciplines of Cinematography; Producing; Editing; Sound; Directing; Screenwriting; Production and Screen Studies in our Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production Program, to commence in early 2025.

AFTRS is a Commonwealth statutory authority, established by the Australian Film, Television and Radio School Act 1973. AFTRS is Australia's national Screen and Broadcast School, established to fuel and empower Australian creativity and storytelling. AFTRS is consistently rated as one of the top film School's in the world.

We are looking for highly skilled industry practitioners with strong experience in teaching and mentoring to join our team in developing and delivering the Bachelor's Program across all disciplines. Under the direction of the Discipline Lead, the Lecturer works collaboratively to develop and deliver the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production program.

About the role:

As a Lecturer at AFTRS, you will:

  • Teach (lectures, workshops, seminars), assess and mentor students in your discipline.
  • Develop curriculum for your discipline area including creating high-quality flexible teaching materials in accordance with the approved Curriculum.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and respectful Teaching and Learning culture.
  • Teach into production subjects within your subject matter expertise.

Selection Criteria

Essential: 

 

The successful candidate will have:

  1. Demonstrated professional experience in relevant discipline area/s including production experience and relevant broadcast credits (or publications if Screen Studies), and the ability to draw on current networks across the Australian Screen and Broadcast sector, to enrich the program and provide opportunities for students.
  2. Teaching experience in relevant discipline area/s.
  3. Ability to work independently, use initiative and prioritise tasks and meet deadlines in a demanding environment.
  4. The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, adapting the message for a diverse audience in an inclusive and accessible way.
  5. Strong interpersonal skills, working collaboratively in a team.
  6. Experience in creating culturally and psychologically safe learning and working environments.
  7. Hold a relevant post graduate qualification OR have the ability to establish equivalence through relevant academic, professional and/or practice-based experience or expertise as outlined in the AFTRS Academic Employee Qualifications Policy. Essential Discipline Specific Criteria 

  

Cinematography – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Image and Production Design subjects in addition to some teaching into the Production subjects and therefore must also have:

  1. Experience in a variety of formats including drama, documentary, feature and/or short film.
  2. Interest in and understanding of production design.
  3. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.

Producing – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Screen Business subject in addition to some teaching into the Production subjects and therefore must also have: 

  1. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.

Editing – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Rhythm & Juxtaposition subject in addition to some teaching into the Production subjects and therefore must also have: 

  1. Experience in narrative, drama and feature editing.
  2. Experience with after effects, motion effects and VFX.
  3. Expert skill in AVID, Premiere and After Effects software.
  4. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.

Sound – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Sound subject in addition to some teaching into the Production subjects and therefore must also have: 

  1. Expert skills in Pro Tools software and post-production sound workflows.
  2. Skill in Logic Pro and/or Adobe Audition software.
  3. Demonstrated experience of location sound recording.
  4. Interest in and understanding of music and how it contributes to soundtrack and storytelling.
  5. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.

Directing – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Character & Performance subject in addition to some teaching into the Production subjects and therefore must also have: 

  1. Experience directing fiction and/or non-fiction in a variety of formats including episodic.
  2. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.

Screenwriting – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Story subject in addition to some teaching into the Production subjects and therefore must also have: 

  1. Demonstrated non-fiction / documentary experience on top of scripted narrative content.
  2. Production experience, with a demonstrated understanding of how writing translates to execution.
  3. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.

Production – These Lecturer Positions will be teaching into the Production subjects and must also have: 

  1. Strong, demonstrated understanding of production and post-production workflows and processes.
  2. Strong demonstrated experience conducting risk assessments.

Screen Studies – These Lecturer positions will be teaching into the Screen Studies subject and must also have: 

  1. Experience teaching Screen Studies in a practice-based film school/course setting.
  2. Experience teaching both fiction and non-fiction concepts across a range of screen media.
  3. A keen knowledge of Australian screen content and an understanding of the history and key debates surrounding the Australian screen industries.

Desirable: 

  1. Experience teaching in a tertiary education facility will be well regarded.
  2. Experience developing curriculum.
  3. Experience creating online and/or multi-modal learning resources.
  4. Experience with or working knowledge of VFX production processes (excl. Screen Studies).

Salary: AFTRS Academic 2.8, Full Time Equivalent $113,089 (Pro Rata for Part-Time) + up to 15.4% super, and excellent benefits.
