Head of Visual Effects (Fixed Term - 6 Years)

We are looking for a hands-on senior level VFX professional to join our team in this newly created exciting role, Head of Visual Effects. You will be responsible for developing and delivering high- quality industry-partnered, practice-based courses, ensuring deep industry integration, practice, and resonance. Engaging deeply with industry partners you will ensure that our curriculum is underpinned by current and emerging industry best practice and delivered using best practice teaching and learning techniques.
About the role:
As Head of Visual Effects at AFTRS, you will:
- Work closely with the Director, Teaching & Learning, internal stakeholders, and industry partners to develop and deliver high-quality curricula that is experiential, student-centred, and accessible to all learners.
- Engage deeply with industry partners to ensure curricula is underpinned and informed by current and emerging industry best practice in teaching and learning, in a rapidly changing environment.
- Engage in teaching and mentoring including preparation and delivery of lecturers and seminars, online material, marking and assessment, subject leadership duties, mentoring of students, the initiation and development of teaching materials and engage in outreach activities.
- Supervise the academic quality and coherence of the delivery of VFX courses at AFTRS in accordance with the agreed curriculum frameworks and academic governance structures.
- Actively manage a small team including annual teaching workload conversations, ensuring that all VFX teaching has been covered and that the School's Academic Workload Model is satisfied, as well as ensuring team is up to date with professional practice and cultural competency training.
- Undertake research in the area that aligns with the School's research priorities.
About you:
You have the following attributes:
- Substantial hands-on professional VFX experience at a senior level, with extensive current industry networks.
- Proven industry leadership experience including strategic planning, team management and high-level staff recruitment and supervision.
- Significant ability to build and maintain strong external partner relationships.
- Demonstrated understanding of current working practices and future industry trends within your discipline and ability to inform high-level strategy, including flexible course design and delivery models.
- Experience training and mentoring in an industry context.
- Demonstrated strong project management and finance skills.
- Excellent communication skills including public speaking and influencing skills.
